BEFIT Phase 1 Updates (Academic Year ‘23/’24 )
Program Updates
  • 500 initial schools were selected for Phase 1 and a thorough readiness assessment of each school was conducted
  • Program has been implemented in 503 schools to date
  • 240 Training of Trainers (ToTs) have been conducted from the National Level to District Implementation Teams in 18 targeted districts
  • 200 zonal officers across the same 18 districts were also trained
  • 2,800 teachers (teaching grades 1-8) have been trained in Phase 1 schools
  • Initial equipment has been procured, delivered, and installed (80k tablets and accessories, 500 solar power systems)
  •  The Ministry of Education’s Program Implementation Management Unit (in charge of system strengthening) has been established and management leads have been hired
  • onebillion has provided a perpetual royalty-free license of its adaptive learning software
  • A digital eAssessment in the local language of Chichewa has been created by RTI for ongoing monitoring of program impact
  • A dedicated Malawian NGO (Imagine LTD) is acting as ecosystem coordinator for the BEFIT program, coordinating with the PIMU
  • Six Implementation Support Providers (training, monitoring, capacity building) and four Technical Support Providers (charging/security /storage cage fabricators) have been retained and national and district-level trainings completed
